COPRO launches certification for NATURE-INCLUSIVE DESIGN in cities and municipalities

Impartial certification body COPRO is launching a label trajectory for NATURE-INCLUSIVE DESIGN in cities and municipalities. COPRO’s aim in this is to draw attention to the qualitative integration of nature-supporting technologies in infrastructure works.

Our view of public space has changed significantly in recent decades. Public greenery is no longer seen as a cost item, but as the key to sustainable societal development. While this positive evolution is one thing, awarding authorities are often still at a loss as to how to put this into practice. Which is why COPRO, as impartial certification body, will be launching a certification trajectory this autumn for NATURE-INCLUSIVE DESIGN in cities and municipalities.

Management system as a guideline for awarding authorities and engineering firms

With the label NATURE-INCLUSIVE DESIGN, a public administration indicates that it wants to focus on optimally supporting nature when work is being done on its territory. The certificate is a management system that primarily relates to the operations of municipal parks and recreation departments and technical departments. The aim is to support authorities in sustainable regional development by providing a guideline for embedding sustainability and high-quality greenery within the public space.

The certification can be seen as counterpart to the previously launched NTMB environmental care system, a management system that aims to increase confidence in ecotech building materials. While NTMB focuses on the producer, NATURE-INCLUSIVE DESIGN certification focuses more on the execution of projects into which NTMB materials can be integrated.

Public greenery as a basis for social cohesion, well-being and economic development

By using this management system the public administration authorities are sending a strong, sustainable signal to citizens. The added value of NATURE-INCLUSIVE DESIGN lies not only with nature: citizens, owners and developers also benefit fully from this sustainable anchoring. And that is exactly what COPRO wishes to highlight, in order to broaden general awareness.

Greenery in the city strengthens biodiversity and can reduce the consequences of climate change such as flooding and heat stress. In a green environment, residents are more likely to go outdoors and meet one another, which contributes to social cohesion. Green surroundings also attract businesses and increase the value of real estate.

Progressing together towards the sustainable development of open spaces

Various cities and municipalities have already taken the first steps towards the sustainable development of open spaces. Wonderful initiatives have already been achieved, but additional effort is needed to make our living environment climate robust. Thanks to the development of a growing network, the NATURE-INCLUSIVE DESIGN label helps to achieve the intended goals. After all, we can learn from each other.
