Until recently, the Belgian normative framework for concrete did not permit the use of sand of secondary origin. Only natural sand was allowed in construction and road concrete. However, recent studies have shown that it is possible to obtain high-quality concrete using recycled concrete breaker sand. This resulted in an extension of the Standard Specifications 250 for road construction (version 5.0, July 2025), in which high-quality concrete breaker sand is now officially permitted for the production of road concrete.
Geeroms Wegenbouw with headquarters in Londerzeel underscores its ambition to play a leading role in increasing the circularity of concrete by being the very first to obtain COPRO certification for its high-quality concrete breaker sand – also known as concrete breaker sand A+ – for its washed concrete breaker sand 0/2 mm.
This expansion of their product range is a logical next step following the commissioning of their washing facility for the production of high-quality recycled aggregates in 2024 and the earlier certification of their washed concrete aggregate A+ 6.3/20 mm.
The certification of this high-quality concrete breaker sand (type A+) also means it can be used in BENOR-certified road concrete, in accordance with the applicable standards for construction classes B9-B10, BF and linear elements, as a partial replacement for fine aggregates (max. 20 v-% of the fine aggregate fraction). For use in BENOR-certified ready-mixed concrete, the normative amendment of NBN B 15-001 is still pending.
With this achievement, Geeroms Wegenbouw has taken an important step in increasing the circularity of concrete and reducing the use of primary materials in the sector.
COPRO is fully committed to sustainability and is looking for producers that want to expand their product range. In the meantime, several applications have already been submitted to follow the example of Geeroms Wegenbouw, which is moving the sector towards greater innovation and sustainability.
The certificate was presented during the closing event of Living Lab Circular Concrete, in which COPRO actively participates in stimulating renewal within the sector.
